We often find certain areas of our home can be hard to keep tidy. One such place, the bathroom vanity.
With meltable people who use the same bathroom, you may have several toothbrushes, hairbrushes, hair products, nail care, make-up, shaving products, and so on. Everyone is in a rush, so everything is left in the easiest place usually making it a mess. Things crammed into the draws and bottles tipped over under the sink. This leaves us grossed out and frustrated. Epically if we are the one who has to do the cleaning.
If this is how your home looks, you may wonder is there really any solution? The answer is YES! But only if you can put the effort in, to teach yourself and family members some basic rules. " Rules!" you may say. "Who wants to follow rules! That sounds so harsh." But really the harshness has always come from individuals teaching the rules. We need to be patient and understanding. That includes with ourselves. None of us are perfect and get things just right the first time. It's like when you're teaching a little one to talk. We have rules we must follow on everything. Like speech. We have rules in spelling and grammar. Otherwise, no one would be able to communicate well. Like when a child first starts to say words. It does not truly come out in ways we can fully understand. But we are not harsh about it. We just continue to say the words again for them and eventually they master the rules of speech.
So too with learning to keep things organized. Everyone needs gentile reminders and to continue to practice.
how to tidy-up the bathroom vanity-use 2 rule's of thumb
So, a couple of rules of thumb to remember while figuring out how to make the space organized is, 'Less Fits Better', and arrange things so it's 'Easy In and Easy Out'.
When you straighten out your vanity, start by getting rid of things no longer being used. Has the family changed the hair products they use, make-up, and shaving products? Get rid of the old. They just take up valuable space. Are there broken elastics, combs, razer, and any parts that belongs to something already thrown away? Get rid of them. 'Less Fits Better'.
A separation of space
Now with those items mentioned in the last paragraph out of the way, can you create a separation of space? Baskets, bags, and boxes tend to work well for this. For family members personal items, some baskets with separate cubies, perhaps kept on a shelf in the closet. Different colors will help distinguish whose is whose. They can come in the bathroom, grab their basket, set their things on the counter to use. Then slip the items back into the basket and out of the way.

Shared items
For items that are shared among family members, having small open top boxes in the draws and medicine cabinet can make it easy to grab items and set them back. This is the 'Easy In, Easy Out' rule. For added convivence write the name of what belongs in each box on the bottom of the inside so if it is empty people still remember which box it belongs in. For belongings that are used every day but may be too large for the draw, you could use hooks on the wall, out of the way, for things that can hang. For other belongings you can find bins or shelves to attach to the wall.
